Ulan-Ude/ New Delhi: Six-time word champion MC Mary Kom advances to the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championship being held in Ulan-Ude (Russia) by defeating Thailand boxer Jutamas Jitpong 5-0 in a category of 51 kg in the course of the competition.
Mary Kom will face Columbian boxer Ingrit Valencia in the quarterfinal match to be held on October 10. Valencia was the winner of a bronze medal in the Rio Olympics, 2016.
Sports minister Kiren Rijuju took to Twitter to congratulate the boxer on her achievement. Moreover, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also tweeted a congratulatory message to the boxing champion adding that the whole nation is in support of her.
Other than Mary Kom, one more boxer Manju Rani who took part in the competition in the 48 kg category, had to face defeat in the first match itself.
