Priyanka Goswami Clinches Silver in 10,000m Racewalking at CWG, medal tally at 27
She dropped to third after eight kilometres, but a last-ditch effort with two kilometres left allowed her to finish second. She, therefore, won the silver, whereas Montag won the gold by coming in first.

Digital Desk: Priyanka Goswami created history as she became the first Indian to win a medal in the 10,000-metre race walk at the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG) on Saturday.

Priyanka bagged a silver medal at the event to take India’s tally at the CWG to 27.

She completed the marathon in a personal best time of 49 minutes and 38 seconds, joining Murali Sreeshankar and Tejaswin Shankar, who took home the silver and bronze medals in the long jump and high jump events, respectively, to become the third medallist in the track and field competitions at CWG 22.

With the first blow of the whistle, Goswami jumped out to an early lead and maintained it to cross the 4000 metre or 4 km mark first.

With six kilometres remaining, she then dropped behind Emily Wamusyi Ngii of Kenya and Jemima Montag of Australia.

She dropped to third after eight kilometres, but a last-ditch effort with two kilometres left allowed her to finish second. She, therefore, won the silver, whereas Montag won the gold by coming in first.

Another Indian competitor, Bhawna Jat, placed seventh. Goswami became the first woman from India to take home a medal in racewalking. She also became the second racewalker to ever take home a medal from the CWG after Harinder Singh, who took home the bronze in the 20-meter racewalk in the 2019 Games.
