Digital Desk: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Friday that experienced pacer Mohammed Shami will replace the injured Jasprit Bumrah in India's roster for the T20 World Cup 2022, which is scheduled to begin on October 16. Shami was initially assigned to a three-man reserve squad but has now been pulled into the main squad ahead of the tournament.

After Deepak Chahar was ruled out due to injury, India has named two players – Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur – in the reserves alongside Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi. The three players have already arrived in Australia and have joined the team.

"The All India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement in India's ICC Men's T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches," the BCCI statement read.

"Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will travel to Australia shortly," the statement added.

The Indian team's management had suffered a number of setbacks in the months leading up to the World Cup. Ravindra Jadeja, the all-rounder, was the first to be ruled out due to a knee injury. A few weeks before the team's departure for Australia, Bumrah's back problem was reported.

Only 14 players went to Australia since the BCCI was yet to announce a substitute player for the injured Jasprit Bumrah, who had been ruled out of the impending mega event owing to a back injury. It should be noted that Bumrah missed the Asia Cup game in the UAE in September owing to a back injury. The BCCI had taken a precautionary call and rested Bumrah from the continental tournament.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami.

Standby players: Mohammed Siraj, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Shardul Thakur.
