Still waiting for my resignation to be accepted by CM Sangma: Meghalaya Home Minister

Shillong: Meghalaya home minister Lakhmen Rymbui stepped down from his post last month, after violence hit the state on August 15 following the death of ex-HNLC leader Chesterfield Thangkhiew. Rymbui said that chief minister Conrad Sangma is yet to accept his resignation.

In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Rymbui expressed shock and proposed for a judicial enquiry on the encounter.

“I hereby express shock in the incident where (L) Chesterfield Thangkhiew was killed following the raid of police at his residence exceeding the lawful tenets of the law. Considering the gravity of the situation, I would to request you to relieve the Home (Police) Department from me with immediate effect,” the letter read.

Rymbui stated that his party, United Democratic Party (UDP) also backed the decision to step down.The United Democratic Party (UDP), a coalition partner of Sangma’s NPP in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, has also called for a judicial investigation into the incident, which sparked violent protests.
