Taliban ban on sports for women says it exposes their bodies

Kabul: Afghan women were exempted from participating in sports, including cricket, as sports activities expose their bodies, Taliban said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, Deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, stated, “Sports activities were not necessary for women as it expose their body. Islam and the Islamic Emirate do not allow women to play cricket or play the kind of sports where they get exposed.”

“In sports they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam didn’t allow women to be seen like this.” added Wasiq.

Last month, Wasiq told that the Taliban allow the men’s national team to travel to Australia for a test match in Hobart later this year.

Recently, the Taliban ordered that only a women teacher can teach the female students, but old men of good character could teach them if it’s not possible.

Moreover, the Taliban says, women attending Universities must wear an abaya robe and niqab, and the classes must be divided by gender or at least divided by a curtain.

The order applies to both private and government universities and institutions.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Taliban announced a new government headed by Mullah Hassan Akhund; however, this will be an acting government and a permanent one.
