JioStar’s sports portfolio will expand to a total of 24 channels in SD and HD formats
Digital Desk: JioStar operates as a joint venture between Reliance Industries, Disney and Bodhi Tree which conducts a considerable network expansion and rebranding initiative to position itself for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The strategic vision of the company includes several regional sports channel launches with both standard definition standard definition(SD) and high definition (HD) options.
The rebranding operation includes the elimination of Sports18 branding that will be followed by Star Sports. The organizational change will affect five current Sports18 television channels as Star Sports sets its sights on leadership in the country's sports broadcasting field.
The channel previously known as Sports18 1 will be renamed with the new title Star Sports 2 Hindi. A transformation of Sports18 2 into Star Sports 2 Telugu accompanies the change of Sports18 3 into Star Sports 2 Tamil.
Furthermore, the Sports18 Khel will be rebrand as Star Sports Khel identity for a continuation of diverse sports broadcasting programming contents. The premium target market will receive three HD channel releases starting 15th March, 2025 through Star Sports 2 Hindi HD, Star Sports 2 Telugu HD, and Star Sports 2 Tamil HD. Star Sports Hindi HD will replace the previous Sports18 1 HD channel.
JioStar plans to add 24 sports channels divided between standard-definition and high-definition delivery through various language platforms. The entertainment network leader JioStar will convert Colors Rishtey and Star Utsav into free-to-air (FTA) platforms to expand its FTA channel lineup to six total channels which service the massive FTA viewer base in India.
A company portfolio readjustment involves discontinuing nine TV channels that include Comedy Central SD and HD as well as Vh1 SD and HD and MTV Beats SD and HD and Bindass and Colors Odia and Star Kiran HD according to the news report.
Following this overhaul, Jiostar will manage 130 pay and FTA channels in both SD and HD variants together with 83 broadcaster packs that incorporate an FTA pack of six.
