Received an 'Emergency Alert' on phone? Know what is Cell Broadcast Alert System Testing

Digital Desk: Many mobile users were surprised today after receiving an emergency alert. The Department of Telecommunications, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority, is testing the Cell Broadcast Alert System as part of a test alert system to improve emergency communication during disasters and guarantee the safety and well-being of our esteemed citizens. 

"As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian individuals and their communities, we are testing the Cell Broadcast Alert System on every Telecom Service Provider. These tests will be conducted periodically in various regions across the country to gauge the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency alert broadcasting capabilities of the Systems in place, of various Mobile Operators and Cell Broadcast Systems," stated a press note by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

What is a Cell Broadcast Alert System?

Regardless of whether the recipients are locals or guests, it may transmit urgent and vital messages for crisis management to any mobile device within a pre-established geographic area using the state-of-the-art Cell Broadcast Alert System. This guarantees that crucial emergency information is promptly shared with the greatest number of individuals. Governmental organizations and emergency services utilize it to alert the public to possible hazards and to stay informed in times of disaster. 

Emergency alerts, such as extreme weather forecasts (e.g., tsunami, flash flood, earthquake, etc.), public safety messages, evacuation orders, and other important information, are frequently sent via cell broadcast.

On their mobile devices, consumers can get simulated emergency warnings during the testing period. We guarantee that these warnings do not signify a real emergency and are merely a part of the scheduled testing procedure. To prevent confusion, each test alert will prominently state that it is a test message.

The tests are being conducted in the State of Assam on 30th October 2023.
