Digital Desk: According to a survey released on Tuesday by
broadband speed research company Ookla, telecom giant Jio's 5G network has a
peak median download speed of about 600 megabits per second, while Bharti
Airtel's network has a top speed of roughly 516 mbps.
Based on information gathered by Speedtest Intelligence, the
report showed 5G speed variations ranging from low double digits (16.27 Mbps)
to 809.94 Mbps, which the company claimed was a sign that the network was still
being calibrated for the 5G service.
Ookla has been taking measurements since June 2022, even though
5G services were only formally introduced on October 1.
The research stated that Jio nearly broke 600 Mbps (598.58 Mbps)
in June 2022 while Airtel "hit over 200 Mbps median download speed in
Delhi at 197.98 Mbps."
This means that at a top speed of 600 mbps, a two-hour HD movie,
which typically has a file size of roughly 6 GB, can be downloaded in 1 minute
and 25 seconds.
In eight cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad,
Siliguri, Nagpur, and Varanasi—Bharti Airtel has begun deploying 5G services.
Jio has begun beta testing in Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
In Varanasi, the Airtel network recorded a maximum median speed
of 516.57 mbps.
In Kolkata, where Airtel's median download speed was 33.83 Mbps
and Jio's was 482.02 Mbps, carriers' median download speeds differed the most
since June 2022.
Jio had a median download speed of 515.38 Mbps in Mumbai,
whereas Airtel only managed 271.07 Mbps.
Over the coming two years, 5G services will gradually be
available over the entire nation; Jio promises to do so by December 2023 and
Bharti Airtel by March 2024.
India's mobile download speed in August 2022 was 13.52 Mbps,
placing it 117th in the world, according to the Speedtest Global Index.
According to the Ookla research, the latest 5G statistics
demonstrate that 5G speeds are significantly faster than India's current
network.
In addition, 5G devices are already demonstrating their
ability to achieve substantially faster speeds, at least under artificially
controlled testing conditions, so it is important to proceed cautiously with
these preliminary results.
According to the survey, Jio saw the biggest rise in
5G-capable smartphones among Speedtest users (67.4%), followed by Airtel
(61.6%) and Vi India (56%)
