Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat hands over his resignation to the governor

Dehradun: Just few months old into the post of Chief Ministership of Uttarakhand, CM Tirath Singh Rawat handed his resignation to the Governor on Friday evening.

Briefing about his sudden decision the CM said, “Given the constitutional crisis, I felt it was right for me to resign. Bypolls could not be held because of Covid-19.”

Tirath Singh Rawat, who had been in Delhi for the past three days for meetings with the BJP leadership, was asked this afternoon by the ruling party to quit. Soon after, he sought an appointment with Governor Baby rani Maurya. But before meeting with the Governor, he handed in his papers to his party chief JP Nadda, said an NDTV report.

BJP MLAs in Uttarakhand will meet today to pick a new leader. Rawat was sworn in as Uttarakhand Chief Minister in March, with a little over a year to the state election, amid fierce dissent against the then Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat.
