Digital Desk: Paneer, a cherished delicacy in Desi households, has come under scrutiny due to a disturbing image that recently surfaced on the internet. This widely loved cottage cheese, frequently used in Indian cuisine, is typically made from scratch in many households or purchased from local dairies. However, a shocking photograph posted by a user on the micro-blogging site 'X' has left people cringing and questioning the hygiene of some paneer production practices.

The image, shared by user @zhr_jafri, depicts a man in a lungi sitting on a surface placed on top of uncovered stacks of paneer, with excess water visibly draining into a plate below. The post was accompanied by a striking statement: "Never buying non-branded paneer after seeing this." This incident has not only raised concerns about local dairy shops but has also led many to wonder if even reputed brands engage in similar unsanitary practices.

Social media users were quick to react, with some making sarcastic remarks about the potential hygiene of branded paneer production. "What if this paneer is packed/branded and sold? LoL," commented one user, while another humorously suggested, "Branded paneer is sat on by people with Gucci shoes."

The exact location of this incident remains unconfirmed, as the image only suggests "Kanpur, UP." This emphasizes the importance of being cautious when purchasing paneer or other dairy products on the market.

In response to these concerns, the original poster shared a video showcasing a more hygienic paneer preparation process at Udaipur's Paras Dairy, demonstrating that not all dairy producers follow such questionable practices.

This incident is not the first instance of unhygienic paneer production coming to light. In 2019, authorities seized approximately 2,000kg of paneer that had been manufactured in unsanitary conditions from two milk dairies in Vasai, a part of the Konkan division in Maharashtra. The Thane Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted tests to determine the authenticity of the seized cottage cheese. This incident followed a previous expose of a dairy in Vasai that had been found using sulfuric acid in the paneer-making process.

The recent incident has prompted consumers to be more vigilant about the source of their paneer, whether homemade, from local dairies, or from well-established brands, underscoring the need for strict hygiene standards in food production.
