Digital Desk: The Google Doodle today commemorates the first-ever landing on the moon's south pole. On July 14, 2023, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota Range, Andhra Pradesh, India launched the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which successfully landed near the lunar south pole region on August 23, 2023. As we all know it wasn't an easy journey and Moon landings are challenging endeavours.

Only the United States, China, and the erstwhile Soviet Union have previously conducted soft landings on the moon, India became the first country to make a soft land near the little-explored southern pole region.

The moon's south pole has piqued the interest of space travellers, who believe in the presence of ice deposits hidden under indefinitely darkened craters. This prediction has now been confirmed by Chandrayaan-3! This ice contains the potential for crucial resources such as air, water, and possibly hydrogen rocket fuel for future humans.

Google additionally created a portal that details Chandrayaan-3's voyage from launch on July 14 to touchdown on August 23.

It also demonstrates why the Moon's south pole is so vital to space scientists.

The Pragyan rover has begun operating as the country achieves a significant milestone.

"Chandrayaan-3 ROVER: Made in India Made for the MOON! The Ch-3 Rover descended from the Lander, and India took its first steps on the moon," said ISRO in a post on X (previously Twitter).

The chairman of the space agency, S Somanath, reportedly told the media that both the lander and the rover are in good health and that photographs obtained by the rover will be shared soon.
