Digital Desk: Shubman Gill, India’s opening batter scored an incredible 92 runs in the World Cup 2023 match against Sri Lanka on Thursday at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. Gill was dismissed on Thursday by Dilshan Madushanka, so he was unable to record his first ODI World Cup century. With 11 fours and two enormous sixes, Gill continued to take the Sri Lankan bowlers to task. He looked in excellent form. He edged that delivery straight to the wicket-keeper, eclipsing him at eight runs from a century.

The dismissal of Gill and Sara Tendulkar, the daughter of great cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, went viral on social media, shocking the fans gathered at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

Earlier, Kusal Mendis, the captain of Sri Lanka, chose to field first after winning the toss. The loss of captain Rohit Sharma dealt a serious blow to the Indian team, but Gill found backing in Kohli, and the two combined to score 60 runs in the opening powerplay.

While Sri Lanka made one change from the team that lost to Afghanistan by seven wickets—bringing in leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha instead of Dhananjaya de Silva—the Indian team came into the game with an unchanged playing XI.
