Why does Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma break down into tears?

New Delhi: Tears of overwhelming emotion seemed visible in the eyes of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma while addressing a crowd at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on the company’s listing day on November 18.

A viral video on the internet displayed Vijay Shekhar Sharma addressing a gathering when he took out a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his tears.

While addressing, Sharma stated that he got emotional due to the National Anthem. He said throughout the event, “It just happened to me because you sang the National Anthem.”

Shekhar Sharma moreover stated that the lyrics of the Anthem, especially “Bharat Bhagya Vidhata,” always make him emotional. He said, “It just overwhelms me, and just saying these words get tears in my eyes.”

Paytm got listed today following India’s biggest-ever initial public offering. 

Shekhar said, “People tell me how do I raise money at such high prices, and I just tell them that I never raise money on the price, raise money on purpose.”

Sharma is a school teacher’s son and an engineering graduate. He founded Paytm in 2010. Lately, Paytm has witnessed rapid growth following Uber registering it as a quick payment option.

According to Forbes, the firm’s success has transformed Sharma into a billionaire with a net worth of USD 2.4 billion. Its IPO has created hundreds of new millionaires in a nation with a per capita income below USD 2,000.

Paytm’s parent firm, One97 Communications, was founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2000. It has emerged as India’s leading digital payment service platform.
