Dhaka: Three coaches were sent crashing off the tracks when a Dhaka bound train, ‘Turna Nishitha’ and Chittagong bound train, ‘Udayan Express’ collided at 3 am on 12 November at Mondobhog station in Kasba.
A government official in the district, Hayat ud Doula Khan, said that Turna Nishitha should have waited outside the station to let the other train pass by. He said that the accident occurred because the loco masters did not obey the signals.
Police chief Anisur Rahman said that at least 16 people have been killed and another 58 were injured. Cranes and other lifting gear were brought to rescue the trapped passengers. Many of the passengers were still asleep when the accident occurred early in the morning.
Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, expressed her shock and sorrow at the injuries and loss of lives. She urged the officials and public to provide support for the victims.
