The Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), a long-standing fixture on the automotive calendar, has been cancelled three years in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Digital Desk: The 2023 Geneva International Motor Show has been cancelled "due to uncertainty in the global economy and geopolitics," according to an official statement.
Originally scheduled to take place across two legs—Geneva in February and Doha, Qatar in November—the event has been reduced to the latter, making its debut at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. The Qatari event will be held on a biennial basis as part of a partnership with Qatar Tourism.
This is the fourth year in a row that the Geneva show has been cancelled; the events in 2022, 2021, and 2020 were cancelled owing to the COVID-19 epidemic.
"We have done all possible to ensure that we can host GIMS 2023 in Geneva in February," said Maurice Turettini, president of the Geneva International Motor Show's permanent committee.
"The improved event format and project were warmly accepted." However, the risks outweighed the opportunities, in the end, Maurice added.
"In these uncertain times, many businesses are not in a position to commit to participating in a show in Europe in the winter," said Sandro Mesquita, CEO of the Geneva International Motor Show.
"After considering all factors, the organization has concluded that the 2023 Salon cannot take place in Geneva as planned."
"We regret having to cancel this 2023 edition for the brands that wished to participate in Geneva, as well as the fans and devoted visitors to our Geneva Salon."
