New Zealand: Strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolts north west of Wellington
There were no early reports of damage, and there was no tsunami warning.

Digital Desk: A huge earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the northwestern part of Wellington, New Zealand on Wednesday. The quake was centred at a moderately shallow depth of 57.4 kilometres, according to early data. At 7.38 p.m., the earthquake struck at a depth of 76 kilometres. It was located 50 kilometres north-west of Paraparaumu.

Within 15 minutes, approximately 31000 people reported feeling the earthquake on GeoNet.

"That was a massive shake! A magnitude 6.0 earthquake, 57 kilometres deep and 50 kilometres north-west of Paraparaumu, was felt throughout the North Island "New Zealand's Civil Defence service stated.

There were no early reports of damage, and there was no tsunami warning.

Residents, however, reported feeling the earth shake for 10-20 seconds, comparing it to a convoy of massive vehicles passing by.

The tremor struck as the cleaning following a severe typhoon that killed four people and caused massive damage across the North Island began.

"It is already a very stressful period for individuals - take after yourself and those around you," the civil defence organisation advised.
