Digital Desk: At least 255 people have been killed after an earthquake of 6.1 magnitudes jolted parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan in the wee hours of Wednesday, reports said.
According to reports, the earthquake struck about 44km from the city of Khost in densely populated southeastern Afghanistan at a depth of 51km.
Meanwhile, the head of the Taliban administration's disaster management authority, Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, said that the majority of confirmed deaths were reported from the province of Paktika, where more than 100 people were killed and around 250 injured.
He further stated that deaths were also reported in the eastern provinces of Nangarhar and Khost, he added, as authorities checked for further casualties.
It may be mentioned that the Bakhtar news agency said that rescuers were arriving via helicopter.
In addition to other parts of Pakistan, tremors were reported in Lahore, Multan, Quetta, and other cities.
The deputy spokesman for the Taliban government, Bilal Karimi, taking the Twitter wrote, "A severe earthquake shook four districts of Paktika province, killing and injuring hundreds of our countrymen and destroying dozens of houses. We urge all aid agencies to send teams to the area immediately to prevent further catastrophe."
The earthquake was recorded as having a magnitude of 6.1 by Pakistan's Meteorological Department. The tremors were experienced in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad and other regions of the eastern Punjab province.
The European Seismological Center (EMSC) said 119 million people in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan felt the earthquake's shocks over a distance of 500 kilometres (310 miles).
