China initiates its first-ever diplomatic contacts with Taliban post-Afghanistan takeover

Kabul: China established its first diplomatic contact with the Taliban in Kabul after they took control of Afghanistan; the two sides now have “unimpeded and effective communication,” said a Chinese official.

In the meeting held on Wednesday, the deputy head of the Taliban’s political office, Abdul Salam Hanafi, Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Wang Yu, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told the media that, “China and the Taliban have unimpeded and effective communication and consultation.”

Wang added, “Kabul is naturally an important platform and channel for us to discuss key issues.” “China respects Afghan people’s independent decision on their future and destiny, supports the implementation of the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned principle, and stands ready to continue to develop good-neighborly relations of friendship and cooperation with Afghanistan and play a constructive role in the peace and reconstruction of the country,” he further stated.

Just after the Taliban took control of Kabul, on August 15, India, the US, and many other countries took down their diplomatic missions, but China along with Pakistan and Russia, kept its embassy open in Kabul, reported PTI.

Taliban leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar headed a Taliban delegation hosted by China last month, calling for an inclusive government in Kabul after the capture of Afghanistan by the Taliban militants has shaken several other countries.

In talks with Baradar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had asked the militant group to sever its links with terror groups, especially the Uyghur Muslim militant group from Xinjiang, the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM). Baradar assured Wang that the Taliban will not permit the ETIM from operating from Afghanistan and called for Chinese investments, said reports. China called for the formation of an open and broad representative government adopting domestic and foreign policies.
