Digital Desk: Nepal's renowned climber, Kami Rita Sherpa, summited Mt. Everest for the remarkable 28th time on Tuesday, just a week after climbing the world's tallest peak for the 27th time.

The 53-year-old climbed the highest point of the 848.86-meter peak at 9.23 a.m., according to the Xinhua news agency.

"Kami Rita Sherpa made history on Tuesday by scaling Mt. Everest for the 28th time," said Bigyan Koirala, an official at the mountaineering division of Nepal's Department of Tourism.

"His condition of health is stable, and he is currently descending to the lower camps," said Migma Sherpa, chairperson of Seven Summit Treks, the agency with which Kami has been associated.

Kami climbed the peak for the 27th time on May 17.

On Monday, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, another Nepali guide, reached the summit for the 27th time.

On May 13, 1994, Kami Rita made her first climb of Mt. Everest.

In addition to Everest, he has also scaled the K2, Lhotse (one time each), Manaslu (thrice), and Cho Oyu (eight).

He holds the record for "most climbs over 8,000 metres."

His mountaineering career began in 1992 when he joined an expedition to Everest as a support staff member.

Similarly, British mountain guide Kenton Cool broke his own record by standing on top of Everest 17 times. He holds the record for the most Everest climbs by a foreign climber.

A total of 478 climbers from 65 nations and regions have been granted approval to climb Mt. Everest during the spring climbing season.

According to the Department, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the first successful climb of the mountain.
