The people of Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region experienced powerful shaking during a 4.0 magnitude earthquake which struck early on Monday. The earthquake epicentre was close to Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in southern Dhaula Kuan area of Delhi.
According to the National Centre for Seismology the earthquake occurred at a depth of five kilometers of earth at 5.36 a.m. A loud noise was also heard immediately after the earthquake hit the Delhi-NCR region and the tremors lasted for 35 seconds.
During the seismic event, a loud rumble came from the earthquake probably because of its close proximity to the surface. This phenomenon probably occurred through movement of tectonic plates as well as multiple energetic releases.
Scientific data has shown that low-magnitude earthquakes occur at the Dhaula Kuan area once every two to three years since there is a lake present in this region. A local earthquake with magnitude 3.3 occurred during 2015.
Delhi Police through X (Formerly known as twitter) platform shared an emergency contact for receiving help. All citizens of Delhi should know they remain protected. For any emergency help “Dial112."
Fortunately, no immediate damage or injuries were reported, despite the strong tremors that shook the national capital this morning.
