Amritpal Singh, chief of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit, and nine of his associates have been held in Dibrugarh jail.
Digital Desk: On March 16th, the Government stated that the Assam Prison in Dibrugarh would move its seven associates of Amritpal Singh after Punjab declined to extend the National Security Act (NSA) detention of those associates, according to senior police statements.
The seven associates of Amritpal Singh including Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwal, Daljit Singh Kalsi, Gurinderpal Singh Guri Aujla ,Harjit Singh and Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal will proceed with the legal case of 2023. Security authorities decided not to extend the NSA detention period, and even the National Security Act detention period is approaching its end.
Police currently detain Amritpal Singh as he is the chief of 'Waris Punjab De' and nine more associates in Dibrugarh jail under NSA for a period for the past two years. Amritpal Singh became an independent Lok Sabha MP in 2024 after successfully winning from the Khadoor Sahib constituency.
The Border Range Amritsar Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police named Satinder Singh confirmed that the police force would begin an investigation regarding the Ajnala police station attack. He confirmed that ten individuals detained under NSA did not receive official arrest for the case.
Amritpal Singh along with his supporters breached the Ajnala police station near Amritsar on 23rd February 2023 by breaking down roadblocks to battle with police forces who tried to stop their operation for the release of his associate members. Several of the protesters were armed with either guns or swords. Amritpal Singh was arrested by police authorities during their extensive manhunt which resulted in his capture on April 23, 2023 at Moga's Rode village.
The charges against him along with his associates involve spreading communal disharmony, murder and violent assault on police forces and interference with public servants carrying out their duties. According to the DIG their team would use due process to proceed with legal action in Amritpal’s situation.
