Digital Desk: Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

The 72-year-old leader, who had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia at AIIMS, New Delhi, was in critical condition and dependent on respiratory support. He died at 3:05 pm.

Yechury had been receiving care in the ICU at AIIMS since August 19, initially admitted for a severe respiratory tract infection. His health had deteriorated significantly in recent days.

A prominent figure in Indian politics, Yechury was elected president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students' Union three times in a single year following his release from jail, a period during which he met Prakash Karat, a lifelong ally. In 1992, he joined the Politburo of CPI(M) and played a crucial role in drafting the Common Minimum Programme for the United Front government in 1996. Yechury was also influential in shaping the ruling coalition for the UPA government in 2004.

His passing marks the end of a significant era in Indian leftist politics.
