Congress slams PM over situation in Manipur, says situation has turned from bad to worse in state

The Congress has been questioning the prime minister's silence and asked why he has not taken out the time to visit the violence-hit state.

Digital Desk: On Wednesday, the Congress questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence over the situation in Manipur and claimed that never before has a PM so thoroughly "abandoned" a state and its people as he has done now.

Jairam Ramesh, general secretary for communications for the Congress, claimed that the fact that Manipur has reached this point after the BJP took office there 15 months ago is "the most damning indictment of its policies and the prime minister's priorities."

He claimed that on the evening of May 3, five months prior, Manipur exploded due to the "divisive politics of the so-called double engine sarkar" there.

The home minister decided it was appropriate to visit the state after almost a month, after being released from his duties related to the Karnataka elections and other pressing affairs, he said.

"But there has been no marked improvement. In fact things have turned from bad to worse. Social harmony has broken down completely. Horrific details of violent crimes emerge every other day. Tens of thousands continue to languish in relief camps. Clashes between the Armed forces and the state police are routine," the Congress leader said on X.

"Despite this, the prime minister has been completely silent except for a much belated, routine and ritualistic comment for less than 5 mins in a 133 minute speech in the Lok Sabha on August 10th. Even though the majority of BJP MLAs want the chief minister to resign, he still brazens it out," Ramesh added.

When was the last time the prime minister visited Manipur, he added, adding that there are certain concerns to consider.

"When did the prime minister last speak with the BJP chief minister of Manipur? When did the prime minister last interact with the Manipur BJP MLAs? When did the prime minister last discuss Manipur with his cabinet colleague from the state?
"Never before has a prime minister abandoned a state and its whole population with such total abandonment. It is a most devastating indictment of the BJP's policies and the prime minister's priorities. Manipur has reached this terrible scenario just around 15 months after the party won a significant majority in the state," Ramesh stated.

The Prime Minister's silence has been questioned by the Congress, who also questioned his lack of visit to the violent state.
