    Delhi court awards 7-year jail term to all five convicts of Uphaar fire tragedy

    New Delhi: In the latest development to the Uphaar fire tragedy case, a Delhi court awarded 7-year jail term to all five convicts of the tragedy including Ansal brothers on charges of evidence tampering.





    Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Pankaj Sharma, also levied a fine of Rs 2.25 crore each on Sushil and Gopal Ansal, news agency PTI reported. The judge while pronouncing the judgement said, “After thinking over nights and nights, I have come to the conclusion that they deserve punishment.”

    The development pertains to tampering with the evidence in the Uphaar fire tragedy case. The Ansals were convicted and sentenced to jail for two years by the Supreme Court.





    The Sc had, however, released the duo on the condition that they pay Rs 30 crore fine each, to be used for building a trauma centre in the national capital.





    The fire tragedy took place at the Uphaar cinema during the screening of the Hindi film ‘Border’ on June 13, 1997 that claimed 59 lives.
