Digital Desk: The National Medical Commission (NMC), India, has been granted the coveted World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Recognition Status for 10 years, according to a press release from the Union Health Ministry.
According to the announcement, WFME certification will make it possible for Indian medical graduates to pursue postgraduate education and practice in other nations that need WFME accreditation, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
In accordance with this accreditation, all 706 already operating medical colleges receive WFME accreditation, as do any new medical colleges that are established over the next ten years.

All IMGs must get ECFMG certification in order to sit for the USMLEs and apply for residency.

All IMGs must be certified by ECFMG in order to sit for the USMLEs and submit a residency application. Before sitting for the USMLE Step 1 exam, this certification usually occurs after the second year of a medical programme has ended.
The ECFMG announced a new requirement in 2010, which will go into effect in 2024 (it was originally scheduled to go into force in 2023 but was delayed owing to COVID).
The new rule states that "individuals applying for ECFMG Certification must be a student or graduate of a medical school that is appropriately accredited beginning in 2024. The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), to be more precise, requires that the institution be accredited by an accrediting body.
A fee of 4,98,5142 ($60,000) is required for each medical college participating in the WFME recognition procedure. This money pays for the site visit team's travel and lodging costs.
As a result, the 706 medical colleges in India would have had to spend about 351.9 crore ($4,23,60,000) to apply for WFME registration. Notably, NMC has accepted WFME's recognition, which will be applicable to all medical institutions under its umbrella.
