LS Speaker Om Birla Protests the EU Parliament's Resolution on Manipur

Digital Desk: Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla on Saturday strongly conveyed India’s misgivings over a resolution by the European Parliament on the Manipur situation, telling its Vice President Nicola Beer that “internal issues” of sovereign countries should not be discussed or debated by others.

A resolution urging the Central government to act "promptly" to stop the violence and safeguard religious minorities in the Northeast state was passed by the European Parliament in July.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat released a statement in which it stated that Birla "underlined India's sovereignty and protested against bringing a proposal in the European Parliament on India's internal issues."

India called the resolution passed by the European Parliament "unacceptable" and "reflective of a colonial mindset."

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha stated that no matter should be considered in isolation in the "interconnected" world during her speech at the G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) on Saturday.

"A number of participants brought up the situation in West Asia, while others discussed the necessity for robust supply chains, to promote international trade, and to deepen multilateralism. I have carefully taken note of these references. We cannot look at any issue in isolation in today's interconnected world," Om Birla stated during the final plenary of the P20 Summit.

Birla also pointed out that the Joint Statement, which was approved at the summit, emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in preserving world peace and assisting in the peaceful settlement of disputes.

"We will continue to engage in parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue in relevant forums as a catalyst for promoting international peace, prosperity, and harmony, including supporting the peaceful resolution of conflicts and disputes," the joint statement stated.

Meanwhile, Nicola Beer commended Birla for a productive P20 Summit and emphasized the need for the European Parliament to have stronger ties with India.

Arthur Cesar Pereira de Lira, the president of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, received the P20 presidency from the speaker of the Lok Sabha.

It should be mentioned that Brazil will hold the G20 presidency next year.
