Digital Desk: The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin following their controversial remarks about Sanatan Dharma. The comments made by Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is also a Tamil Nadu Minister, had sparked outrage and political turmoil.
In a recent public statement, Udhayanidhi Stalin drew sharp criticism for allegedly comparing Sanatan Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria. His remarks, which also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, led to a wave of backlash from various political parties and religious groups. Despite the mounting criticism, Udhayanidhi Stalin declared his willingness to face any legal consequences arising from his statements.
The Supreme Court's notice extends beyond Udhayanidhi Stalin, also summoning Members of Parliament A Raja, Thirumavalavan, and Su Venkatesan, as well as the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, Union Home Ministry, Minister for Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowment Department PK Sekar Babu, Chairman of Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission Peter Alphonse, and others.
Reacting to the notice, DMK leader TKS Elangovan said, "There was a petition filed, and they are seeking clarification. Let the clarification proceed... The matter is before the court, and we will ask the Central government to explain what 'Sanatan Dharma' signifies, whether it promotes equanimity in a civilized society or represents outdated and barbaric practices. We will respond to the court's proceedings accordingly."
Another DMK leader, A Raja, had also made controversial statements regarding Sanatan Dharma, challenging PM Modi and Amit Shah to a debate on the subject. He stated, "Today, they talk about promoting Sanatan Dharma. I have challenged PM Modi and Amit Shah for a debate. You bring a crowd of 1 crore people in Delhi, have your Shankaracharya on the dais, and carry your weapons. I will only bring the books of Ambedkar and Periyar."
