Anil Vij, Haryana's Health Minister, reports that authorities investigated a Maiden plant in the state's Sonepat town and discovered 12 infractions of good procedures.
Digital Desk: Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij announced on Wednesday that the state government has decided to "totally halt" the manufacture of medications by Sonipat-based pharmaceutical business Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited.
The government also issued a warning to the company after "12 problems in the production of medications were discovered during the joint inspection performed by the drugs department teams of the Centre and state government."
The development follows a World Health Organization (WHO) alert issued against the company's four cough syrups following the deaths of children in Gambia.
Following the WHO notice, the Haryana government sent samples of four cough syrups manufactured by the pharmaceutical company to the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) in Kolkata. "The report is pending, and additional action will be taken as needed."
However, 12 problems were discovered during a joint inspection conducted by teams from the national and state narcotics departments. As a result, we have decided to halt all production at this pharmaceutical company. "The corporation has received a notification," Vij added.
On October 6, Haryana requested an investigation into accusations of tainted cough syrups being manufactured at the company's Sonipat site. The samples were confiscated and transported to Kolkata for further analysis.
The Drugs Controller General of India, India's drug authority, had also launched an investigation.
Following the WHO's apparent linkage of four Indian-made cough syrups to the deaths of 66 children in Gambia a few days ago, Vij stated that samples had been sent to the CDL in Kolkata and that further action will be taken based on the laboratory's conclusion.
"In the case, a top official from the Centre's Department of Pharmaceuticals interacted with Haryana's Additional Chief Secretary (Health). The pharmaceutical company's cough syrups have been cleared for export. It is not for sale or distribution within the country. We will be able to reach any decision after we receive the CDL report after the syrup samples have been thoroughly inspected there," the minister had stated.
