Digital Desk: In a historic development, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Manipur's oldest valley-based armed group, has entered into a momentous peace agreement with the Central Government. This groundbreaking stride is poised to be a catalyst for enduring peace and stability in the region, marking a significant shift in the landscape of Manipur.

Established in 1964, the UNLF has been involved in operations both within and outside Indian Territory. The peace agreement signifies a substantial leap towards ushering in a new era of tranquility, not only in the North East in general but specifically in Manipur.

Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing his sentiments on this significant development, tweeted, "I welcome them to the democratic processes and wish them all the best in their journey on the path of peace and progress." Shah emphasized the historical importance of this achievement, stating that it aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of all-inclusive development in Northeast India.

The Government of India, under the guidance of Amit Shah, has actively pursued agreements with various armed groups in the North East since 2014, aiming to end militancy and catalyze development in the region. This marks the first instance of a valley-based Manipuri armed group opting to return to the mainstream, aligning with the commitment to renounce violence and uphold the Constitution of India.

The ramifications of this agreement extend beyond the cessation of hostilities between the UNLF and security forces, presenting an opportunity to address the longstanding concerns of the community. To oversee the enforcement of the agreed ground rules, a Peace Monitoring Committee (PMC) is set to be established.
