Digital Desk: The government of Manipur has extended the suspension of mobile data and internet services across the northeastern state for an additional five days following fresh incidents of violence that have disrupted the region after a brief period of relative calm.

The order, issued by Manipur Home Commissioner T Ranjit Singh, cited several reports of public protests against the deployment of Central security forces, public gatherings and meetings at various local clubs, and attempts to storm the residences of elected members and leaders of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

The order expressed concerns over the potential misuse of social media platforms by anti-social elements for the transmission of incendiary content, including hate speech and violent video messages that could inflame public passions and adversely impact the state's law and order situation.

"As there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech, and hate video messages, inciting the passions of the public, which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the state of Manipur,” the order read.

Given the gravity of the situation and the potential for serious disturbances, the government decided to extend the suspension of mobile internet and data services within the territorial jurisdiction of Manipur for an additional five days with immediate effect. The order also warned that any violation would result in legal action.

This move comes as Manipur was slowly recovering from previous bouts of violence, only to be shaken once again by a tragic incident on Tuesday. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Moreh, Chingtham Anand Kumar, was killed by armed miscreants while on duty, overseeing the clearing of grounds for the construction of a helipad. This project was a joint effort of the police and the Border Security Force (BSF).

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, saying, "Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police. His dedication to serve and protect the people will always be remembered. The perpetrators will be brought to justice.”

In response to the unrest, Manipur police detained 2,194 people on Tuesday across various districts of the state for their involvement in activities that violated the law. The government's decision to extend the internet suspension aims to restore and maintain public order during this turbulent period.
