Digital Desk: The Women's Reservation Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha during the special session of Parliament, drew criticism from the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party, and several other opposition parties on Tuesday. While the Congress claimed that women would not soon see the benefits of the proposed legislation, AAP's Atishi said that it was intended to deceive female voters ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
A constitutional amendment bill was filed by the government to allocate one-third of the Lok Sabha and state assembly seats to women. Political parties supported the decision, but several questioned the bill's delimitation and census clause.
The proposed legislation will take effect following the subsequent delineation process, which may occur following the first census to be done after 2026.
The Congress poked fun at the Centre by stating, "This bill was definitely introduced today, but the women of our country do not seem to be getting its benefits anytime soon."
The Congress added that "there is no information as to when this census will be held" and stated that the bill would take effect when the census and delimitation operations were completed.
The Congress stated, "This means that PM Modi has thrown another phrase before the elections."
When asked whether the AAP will support or oppose the legislation in Parliament, Atishi stated to India Today TV, "The most crucial question is whether women will receive reservations in the 2024 election or not. And if reservations aren't going to be offered in 2024, then this measure is just an attempt to dupe women. What justification did this measure have for including a census clause? What justification did this measure have for including a delimitation clause?"
According to Atishi, the AAP is asking the government to revise the draught law and add a one-third reservation for women starting with the 2024 elections.
"We support women's reservations in principle. Yet this bill is blatantly hypocritical. This bill is an attempt to deceive women," Atishi continued.
Brij Bhushan, the head of the Wrestling Federation of India, has been accused of sexual harassment by numerous female wrestlers. "BJP is Brij Bhushan's party, women are being fooled by the BJP," Atishi stated.
Asaduddin Owaisi, the head of AIMIM, expressed his opposition to the draught legislation and claimed that it had a "major flaw" because it did not include a quota for Muslim women.
"We support women's reservations in principle. Who are you giving representation to? There should be representation for those who don't have it. We oppose this plan because there is no Muslim women's quota, which is its main problem," Asaduddin Owaisi stated.
Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, added that social justice and gender equality should be balanced in the bill.
The reservations for backward, Dalit, minority, and tribal (PDA) women should be specified in this bill explicitly and in definite percentage form, Akhilesh Yadav said.
