Digital Desk: Assam has become a hub of "jihadi activities," with five groups linked to the Bangladesh-based terror outfit Ansarul Islam found in five months, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday (August 4).

"Six Ansarul Islam members from Bangladesh had entered Assam to brainwash youth, and one of them was detained when the first unit was discovered at Barpeta in March of this year," CM Sarma said at a press conference.

"The indoctrination of Muslim youths in private madrasas by imams from outside the state is alarming," he added.

"The activities of jihadis are very distinct from those of terrorists or insurgents. It begins with years of indoctrination, then active support of Islamic fundamentalism, and lastly, engaging in subversive activities," said the chief minister.

Reportedly, several camps were run by Bangladeshi nationals "who entered the state illegally" during the covid–19 outbreak.

"So far, just one of these Bangladeshis has been detained, and I urge people to notify the local police if someone from outside the state becomes a teacher or an imam at a madrasa," he said.
