Digital Desk: The Delhi High Court has issued a strict warning to some Congress leaders in the defamation case filed by BJP leader Smriti Irani. Jairam Ramesh, Pawan Khera, and Netta D'souza have been ordered by the court to delete their tweets about Irani's daughter within 24 hours.
In their tweets, Congress leaders attempted to establish a link between Irani's daughter and a Goa restaurant.In addition, Congress leaders have been ordered to appear in court on or before August 18.
Irani, the Minister for Women and Child Development, has sought over Rs 2 crore in damages from Congress leaders for making baseless and false allegations against her and her daughter.
The court stated that if the accusers do not comply with its orders to remove tweets, retweets, posts, videos, and photos from social media in relation to the allegations made against Irani and her daughter within 24 hours, the material will be removed from Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
Irani's action came after Congress leaders accused her 18-year-old daughter, Zoish Irani, of illegally running a bar in Goa and also targeted the minister, demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remove her from his Cabinet.
The court stated that if the accusers do not comply with its orders to remove tweets, retweets, posts, videos, and photos from social media in relation to the allegations made against Irani and her daughter within 24 hours, the material will be removed from Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
According to the high court, "slanderous and bogus" allegations were made against Irani, and the "balance of convenience lies in favour of the plaintiff and against the defendants."
"I believe that slanderous allegations were made against the plaintiff without any verification of actual facts." "The plaintiff's reputation has suffered significant harm as a result of the defendants' press conference-related tweets and retweets," said the judge.
The case has been rescheduled for hearings before the court and registrar on November 15 and August 18, respectively.
During the hearing, Irani's counsel stated that she is a respected citizen of the country and that the three Congress leaders planned a press conference on July 23 to defame and malign the reputation of the BJP leader and make baseless allegations.
