Digital Desk: The Assam government has extended the disturbed area notice under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for an additional six months starting on April 1 in eight districts of the state, officials informed on Wednesday,
The disturbed area tag has been expanded, according to the official, for Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao.
After reviewing the situation concerning law and order and security in the state, the state government has removed the Lakhipur sub-division of Cachar district from the list of disturbed areas covered by the Military Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.
Amit Shah, the home minister, stated on March 25 that the "substantial improvement in the security situation in Northeast India" had led to the Centre's decision to "lower the Disturbed Areas" under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur.
Shah wrote, "A momentous day for the Northeast! " in a series of tweets. The GoI, led by PM Narendra Modi, has once again decided to decrease the disturbed areas covered by AFSPA in Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur. This decision has been taken on account of significant improvement in the security situation in North-East India”.
"For the first time in India's history, PM@narendramodi Ji gave the North East top priority for security, peace, and development. As a result, the region is currently moving quickly towards peace and development," he added.
Shah said, “ @narendramodi Ji for bringing this positive change in the lives of the people of North East and connecting the region with the hearts of the rest of India. Congratulations to our sisters and brothers of the Northeast on this momentous occasion.”
However, before this, the centre had announced that as of April 1, 2022, all of Assam—aside from nine districts and a subdivision of Cachar district—would be free of the AFSPA.

The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of 1958 (Afspa) was extended in eight additional districts and one subdivision by six months in October of last year after the Assam government withdrew its application from the West KarbiAnglong district due to an improvement in law and order.
