Digital Desk: In a scathing attack on Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Akhil Gogoi, the President of Raijor Dal and the MLA of Sivasagar, accused him of being a 'blackmailer' for proposing an increase in power tariffs as a means to ensure 24/7 electricity supply in the region. Gogoi's remarks come amidst rising tensions over frequent power outages and soaring electricity costs in the state.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Gogoi said, "Himanta Biswa Sarma is the most unsuccessful Chief Minister of Assam. He is a blackmailer who imposes more misery on the people of Assam by stating that if people need 24/7 power supply, then a tariff hike is a must." Gogoi went on to criticize Sarma's track record, citing his inability to generate sufficient electricity during his 22-year political career, resulting in citizens resorting to hiring generators and seeking refuge in 'Namghars' (Prayer Houses).

One of Gogoi's primary contentions was the allocation of electricity from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). He claimed that while the state government consistently emphasizes its partnership with NHPC, Assam receives only 25 megawatts (MW) from the project, with the remainder being distributed to other states.

Gogoi also highlighted the significant disparity in power tariffs between Assam and other states, stating, "Assam is one of the most expensive states in terms of power hikes; only six other states have raised their power tariffs besides ours." He further pointed out that Assam residents pay Rs 7.60 per unit up to 500 units for the 3KW domestic-LT category, significantly higher than other states.

"Assam has been converted into a desert by CM Sarma. In Assam, there is only soliciting. A loan burden hangs over their heads," Gogoi remarked, alluding to the financial strain faced by the citizens due to high electricity costs.

In response to Gogoi's criticism, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended his government's actions and explained the need for a potential electricity tariff hike. He asserted that Assam faced an increased demand for electricity, requiring an additional 2,500 MW this year, compared to the previous requirement of 1,800 MW. CM Sarma emphasized, "The power is not cut for 5-10 hours anywhere, and if people need 24/7 power supply, then we shall have to hike the tariff."

CM Sarma also revealed that the state government had secured partnerships with various companies to increase power generation capacity in the coming year, promising residents a continuous flow of electricity.

The recent extreme temperatures in Assam have exacerbated the concerns of residents, who endure unbearable living conditions due to constant power cuts. Despite the potential tariff hikes, many are disillusioned with the inability to provide a consistent and affordable power supply.

As the power crisis in Assam intensifies, the clash between the state government and opposition leaders like Akhil Gogoi highlights the urgent need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions to meet the increasing demand for electricity while ensuring affordability for the citizens.
