Digital Desk: Amid the power crisis in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday met with Union Power Minister RK Singh in New Delhi to discuss the state's ongoing power issue and to brief him on the state's unprecedented 26% increase in power consumption as a result of the expansion of the economy's productive sectors.
In a statement regarding the events on the X platform, the chief minister stated, "Union Power Minister RK Singh has assured to consider my request to allocate at least 300 MW of power to Assam, which will aid in tiding over the current power deficit."
Earlier while speaking to the media, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that load shedding was being personally monitored and that we needed 2,500 MW this year as compared to 1,800 MW earlier.
"We do not have so much electricity as of now, and if we have to buy electricity, then the power tariff will increase by Re. 1," CM Sarma remarked when explaining the reasons why there may be a chance that the electricity tariff could go up.
The chief minister further stated that a tariff increase would be necessary if the public required a 24-hour electricity supply.
He stated that the state government has partnered with many companies to increase the MW for the upcoming year so that residents may have a continuous supply of power.
It should be noted that the state has recently endured extremely high temperatures, which have made people's lives miserable; also, frequent power outages have made things even worse. As a result, people have raised concerns that they are still not getting a steady supply of electricity even after tariff hikes.
