Assam CM asked DGP to study Gauhati HC’s verdict on Dhemaji blast

Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday requested that the Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh analyze the Gauhati High Court's decision, which was handed down just one day after all accused in the 2004 Dhemaji bomb blast incident were acquitted of all charges.

The Assam Chief Minister addressed a press conference in Guwahati that his government would decide whether to appeal the judgement only after conducting a comprehensive investigation.

CM Sarma said, “I've requested the DGP study the Gauhati High Court's verdict so that we can appeal it to the Supreme Court if we receive legal advice.  Let us see how the honorable judges have arrived at this conclusion. The verdict copy was not made public until yesterday.”

Notably, the Gauhati High Court exonerated all accused involved in the 2004 Dhemaji bomb blast incident of all charges on Thursday. It has come to light that the accused had appealed the lower court's decision to the high court, where they were cleared of all charges.

The incident relates to the Independence Day bombing in Assam's Dhemaji district on August 15, 2004, which claimed the lives of up to 18 children. ULFA had claimed responsibility for the attack.

A lower court had convicted up to six of the accused. The court pronounced a life sentence for Dipanjali Burhagohain, Muhi Handique, Jatin Dubori, and Leela Gogoi.

Additionally, two other accused, Prashanta Bhuyan and Hemen Gogoi, were sentenced to four years of imprisonment. After the Gauhati High Court overturned the decision of the lower court, they were all exonerated.
