Digital Desk: Congress leader and MLA from Vadgam in Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani arrived in Guwahati, Assam, on Sunday ahead of his court appearance in connection with the case filed here last year for allegedly assaulting a policewoman.
Mevani is reportedly scheduled to appear before a court in the Barpeta district on Monday for allegedly assaulting a policewoman in Assam after he was brought here from Gujarat last year following an FIR filed against him over a tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jignesh Mevani after arriving in Guwahati told reporters, "I respect the court of law. I do not hold any grudges against anyone. Both the government and I will present our arguments before the judge."
Mevani stated, "The upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha general elections would be highly crucial. Due to problems like rising prices and unemployment, farmers and students are committing suicide all over the country."
He claimed, "The government is targeting political entities like me," referring to the BJP-led central government. The Bharat Jodo Yatra and the voters' approval in the Karnataka elections, however, have led the Congress party's fortunes to improve.
"The Congress respects all religions. To defeat the BJP, the opposition parties should set aside their differences and work together. This will guarantee positive outcomes and assist in preserving the Constitution. In light of the elections in 2024, we're hopeful the Bharat Jodo Yatra will be successful," Jignesh Mevani added.
Mevani, a Dalit activist from Gujarat, was released from jail in April 2022 in Kokrajhar, Assam, after completing the necessary legal procedures. He was accused of assaulting a policewoman while being driven by a police posse from Guwahati to Kokrajhar, and the court sentenced him to five days in police custody.
Jignesh Mevani had allegedly tweeted that Prime Minister Modi "considered Godse as God" and had been apprehended by an Assam Police posse in connection with that accusation.
According to the FIR submitted at Kokrajhar Police Station in Assam, he had urged PM Modi to appeal for communal unity during his visit to Gujarat in the same tweet, reported PTI,
According to a complaint filed against him in Barpeta, Mevani was arrested again after being released on bail on charges of assaulting a policewoman who was a member of the police posse that travelled with him to Kokrajhar.
He was charged in this case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 294, 323, 353, and 354 for allegedly using inappropriate language in public, intentionally inflicting harm, attacking a public official while performing his or her duties, and using unlawful force on a woman with the intent to violate her modesty.
