Digital Desk: Congress workers on Monday protested in several states against the BJP-led central government, calling for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the Adani Group in response to an accusing report by US short-seller Hindenburg. Party workers protested in Bhopal, Chandigarh, Jammu, Lucknow, and Bhararisain, while Congress leaders once again shouted in Parliament for a JPC investigation into the Adani-Hindenburg issue.
Congress MP Deepender Hooda stated that the party conducted protests outside the Raj Bhavans of each state, demanding an investigation into the Adani issue.
Top Congress officials in Assam, including the state president and MLAs, were detained during the party's 'Raj Bhawan Chalo' program, reported PTI.
"We were not allowed to march towards the Raj Bhavan. Police stopped us from leaving the assembly site," Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar, who was present at the protest site, told PTI.
"We were arrested and brought to the Latasil Police Station. We were later allowed to leave on PR bond," he added.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took out a protest march from the Parliament House complex to Vijay Chowk along with MPs of other opposition parties, charging that there was no rule of law and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was running the country like a "dictator."
The protest march was organized in response to the Bharatiya Janata Party's attack against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly defaming India with his remarks on democracy in London.
In response to the uproar in Parliament caused by Gandhi's comments, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi "got his drumbeaters to get Parliament adjourned today so that the demand for JPC into the Adani MahaMegaScam does not get raised."
Meanwhile, the government has informed Parliament that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is investigating market claims against Adani Group, whose nine publicly traded companies saw their market capitalization fall by 60% between January 24 and March 1. Minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated in the Lok Sabha that the volatility in these companies' stocks has had no major effect on the systemic level.
