the GMC, Mayor Mrigen Sarania of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC)
announced a 30% pay increase as well as benefits under the Employees State
Insurance Corporation (ESIC) programme on the occasion of International Labour
Day.
color:black">Additionally, on Monday, the Mayor and Councillors of the Guwahati
Municipal Corporation met to launch a number of initiatives aimed at improving
working conditions for city residents as well as initiatives to reduce air
pollution and support the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Mayor and Councillors
participated in a sapling planting drive in the Betkuchi GMC office property to
kick off the event. They did this to highlight the need for more green space
and to advance the city's environmental consciousness. The Mayor then turned
over six Back Hoe Loaders and a set of Road Sweeping machines, which will be
vital in keeping the city clean and hygienic as well as controlling air pollution.
These were a component of Guwahati City's flagship National Clean Air Programme
of the Indian government.
color:black">The dignitaries then went to the Fatashil GMC Harijan Colony,
where they were greeted warmly by the residents. As a show of solidarity and
support, the Mayor and Councillors joined the residents for lunch and
interacted with them.
To make the occasion more
inclusive, the Mayor and Councillors spent time at the Ulubari with three
Harijan Colony residents, congratulating them and discussing their worries,
challenges, and criticisms.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor emphasised the importance of
employees in keeping Guwahati clean and sanitary, adding, "It is essential
to have an inclusive approach to development, and today's event is a testament
to that." We are devoted to make our city more eco-friendly and clean, and
we will collaborate with the community to achieve this goal. We also offer to
provide health camps in Fatashil and Ulubari to keep the working people
healthy. Furthermore, workers should emphasise good education for their
children so that they can go on to become Corporation officers. To enable this,
the Corporation's school system will be modernised."
