Digital Desk: The people of Assam have been complaining about regular power outages and increasing electricity rates as the state is now suffering from intense heat wave conditions.
As a result of this, many residents have turned to the streets to protest power disruptions and bill hikes, claiming that the rise in mercury has made their lives miserable.
Amid demonstrations and power outages, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that load shedding is being personally monitored, adding that previously 1,800 Megawatts (MW) were necessary, but this year we needed 2,500 MW.
CM Sarma explained why the electricity tariff could be raised, asserting, "We don't have much electricity right now, and if we have to buy electricity, the power tariff will be raised by Re.1."
Meanwhile, he stated that the state administration has agreed to increase the MW over the next year to provide citizens with a continuous flow of power.
"The power is not cut for 5-10 hours anywhere," the chief minister stated, "and if people require 24/7 power supply, we will have to raise the tariff." he asserted.
It should be noted that the state has recently endured severe temperatures, making people's lives unpleasant, and the continual power outages make it worse. As a result, consumers have expressed worry that, even after tariff increases, they are not receiving a consistent flow of electricity.
