Digital Desk: In accordance with an interstate border deal inked earlier this year by the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya, the Meghalaya High Court has imposed an interim halt on physical demarcation or the placement of boundary posts on the ground.
Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and his counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, signed an MoU in March to demarcate the border in at least six of the 12 contested places that have frequently sparked tensions between the two states.
On a plea brought by four 'traditional chiefs' of Meghalaya, Justice H S Thangkhiew granted an interim stay till the next date of hearing on February 6, 2023.
"It is understood, however, that no actual marking or installation of boundary posts on the ground shall be taken out during the intervening period, pursuant to the MoU dated 29.03.2022, until the following date," Justice Thangkhiew added.
In their appeal, the 'traditional chiefs' petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the MoU inked between the two northeastern states, arguing that it breached provisions of the Constitution's Sixth Schedule, which deals with special provisions for tribal administration.
