Digital Desk: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will be conducting a three-day public hearing beginning July 19 on suggestions/complaints about the draft proposal on the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary seats in Assam, according to an official release issued here on Thursday.

The ECI published a notification on June 20 this year, seeking ideas and objections to the draft plan on the delimitation of assembly constituencies by June 11, and around 500 suggestions/objections were received until the deadline.

These suggestions/objections are being considered by the Commission, and it has also been agreed to arrange public sittings in the state to hear the suggestions/objections received from individuals and organisations on the draft plan.

The public hearing will begin at 1500 hours on the first day at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra and will span the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao.

Representatives from Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Cachar will be heard until 1200 hours on July 20, followed by Kamrup, Kamrup(Metro), Nagaon, Sonitpur, Morigaon, and Darrang until 1400 hours.

From 1530 hours on the same day, the Commission will also interact with representatives of national and state-recognized political parties (in alphabetical order).

The hearing will be held from 0930 to 1230 hours on the final day, with delegates from Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dhmaji, Lakhimpur, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Golaghat, and Majuli, according to the statement.

In Assam, the draft delimitation proposal kept the number of assembly seats at 126 and the number of Lok Sabha constituencies at 14. In addition, the state retains seven Rajya Sabha seats.

The draft proposes expanding the number of reserved assembly seats for Scheduled Castes from eight to nine and for Scheduled Tribes from sixteen to nineteen. Two Lok Sabha constituencies have been suggested under the ST category and one for the SC community.

The majority of the assembly and Lok Sabha seats' physical boundaries have also been proposed to be changed by the panel.
