Trash will be collected in Chandrapur till new site is found: Assam CM

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that waste would be collected in Chandrapur until a new site is found.

The Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA) asked the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to cease dumping substantial consumption at Chandrapur because it doesn't have a setting clearance from the authorizations connected.

The National Green Tribunal had asked for the relocation of the dumping ground from Boragaon. It is adjacent to the freshwater lake, Deepor Beel. So garbage has to be transferred. Otherwise, diseases would be on the growth.

"The officials are dumping trash in Chandrapur as there is no alternative right presently," CM Sarma stated.

"Meantime, we are working to obtain an alternative spot. However, if we do not notice different sites soon, Chandrapur locals do not permit us to dump the trash, then Guwahati would recount cases of major diseases."

Guwahati city, with over a million residents, produces 550 tonnes per day of solid garbage.

Questioned concerning the problem faced by the locals of Chandrapur, the chief minister stated, "If we do not consider CHanrapur area for trash and if children die, will the people of Chandrapur be happy?"
