Assam: ULFA-I openly threatens DGP, Asks him to stop 'Fake Police Encounters'
This comes after a woman was detained in Dibrugarh by Indian Army and Assam Police soldiers for allegedly having suspicious ties to the banned group.

Digital Desk: Assam Director General of Police GP Singh has been publicly threatened by the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), which has demanded that he either stop conducting fake encounters against locals or leave the state.

This comes after a woman was detained in Dibrugarh by Indian Army and Assam Police soldiers for allegedly having suspicious ties to the banned group.

Self-described captain Rumel Axom (undersigned), ULFA-I (Media Department), issued the following press release: "We have learned that Dibrugarh police arrested a woman from Tinsukia's Laipuli on Sunday along with Rs 3 lakh, suspecting her of extorting money in the name of ULFA-I. Please stop harassing local people in the name of ULFA-I because we want to be clear that the woman has no affiliation with the group.

The outlawed sect also made it clear that Hem Chetia of Sivasagar, who was recently detained by police on suspicion of extortion in Upper Assam, is unaffiliated with them.

"A man named Hem Chetia of Sivasagar's Geleki neighbourhood was recently taken into custody by Moranhat police; however, during an attempt to flee, he was shot in the leg by the police. The aforementioned person has no connection with ULFA-I. Assam Police should stop acting heroically in the name of fake encounters, even though there is a chance that a vicious circle may have used him as a scapegoat. Instead, they should target corrupt individuals like ACS officials Biswajit Goswami and Mrinal Kanta Sarkar for stealing the hard-earned money of the public.

Police have to show their bravery by taking on the coal mafias or individuals like Milan Buragohain and Lachit Gogoi who are in charge of the Burmese supari (betel nut) syndicate," according to the press release.

ULFA-I further claimed that Suruj Gogoi of Sivasagar was allegedly killed by state police officers in April of last year during a fake police encounter.
