Impact of AGP on Common people-
Asom Gana Parishad is a regional party founded on a dramatic mass awakening in an atmosphere of passion and conflict. The majority of noteworthy leaders came from student politics or leadership positions before entering party politics. Naturally, ideas and ideologies were lacking in the realm of party politics. They did, in fact, fail. & were helpless, the people of Assam lost a lot of trust and confidence. The primary cause of this was immature politics and a lack of ideological approach.
Formation, Internal Division and Integration of AGP:
On August 15, 1985, the AASU and the government signed the Assam Accord. Following this, on October 13-14, 1985, during the Golaghat National Convention, it was agreed to build a regional political party called Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and on October 14, 1985, the Asom Gana Parishad was founded in Golaghat.
At the same time, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, president of AASU, was elected president of the new political party. Following that, in December 1985 state assembly elections, the AGP contested and won seven of the 14 Lok Sabha (Parliament) seats, forming the Assam government with 67 of the 126 members. In 1996, the party won elections and returned to power in Assam.
Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the party's leader, was Assam's chief minister for two terms, from 1985 to 1990 and again from 1996 to 2001. In 2000, Atul Bora, former Assam PWD minister and senior party leader, and Pulakesh Baruah split to join the Trinamool Gana Parishad.
Many claims were brought when the Second AGP government returned to power under Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, relating to the overall inert leadership of the mahants involved in corruption and hidden killings throughout the mahant's term. As a result, he was removed as party president. Mahanta then created his own party, called Asom Gana Parishad.
On October 14, 2008, the breach between all the isolated sections was finally repaired in the historic city of Golaghat. The National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and comprised of parties such as the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front, formed its first administration in Assam in May 2016.
In November 2016, Atul Bora was elected president of the Asom Gana Parishad after amending the party's constitution for the second time. In the Sarbananda Sonowal Ministry, he was also the Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Processing, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary.
