Assam Floods: "Around 60,000 people are unable to return to their homes," says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

The state reported three flood-related deaths in the last 24 hours.

Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that 30,000 to 60,000 people were unable to return to their homes due to flood damage. He stated that he discussed about the situation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during their meeting.

"There are between 30,000 and 60,000 people who are currently unable to return to their homes, according to assessments that are being done. He promised to support us in any way he could," said CM Sarma. "This time, the state comparatively received more rainfall,' he added. 

Assam experienced severe floods due to constant rain, which had a devastating effect on thousands of people.

In a daily report, Assam State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA) stated that 620 villages in 14 districts were still affected by the flood. 

As per official reports, over 14,000 hectares of cropland were submerged in water, and nearly 9 lakh people were still experiencing the effects of the flood. The state reported three flood-related deaths in the last 24 hours.

Notably, floods have recently severely damaged Assam's infrastructure, including roads, bridges, embankments, and other building materials. In 14 districts, the government is now running 173 distribution centres and relief camps. About 75,000 people are still in these relief camps, even though some residents have returned to their homes. Due to the high water flow, significant erosion has occurred in Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Hojai, and Kamrup districts.

Over 40 lakh people and over 33 lakh animals were affected across 31 districts when the flood began.
