Digital Desk: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that the state government's war on drugs is yielding positive results, based on the recovery of drugs worth Rs 900 crore in Assam since May 2021.

Speaking at an event on Friday where President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated a number of projects, CM Sarma said that 6,800 persons had been arrested in connection with the seized drugs.

He said that on August 2 of last year, the Assam Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted a joint operation that resulted in the seizure of a massive amount of narcotics worth Rs 15 crore in the Karbi Anglong district, and on July 15 of last year, the police arrested a drug dealer in Karimganj district and took away a massive amount of illicit drugs worth Rs 3 crore.

Sarma called today's ceremony a historic moment in Assam's journey toward equitable growth and development. The Assam CM thanked the President for visiting the state despite having a very hectic official schedule and termed her journey from a remote village in Odisha to the highest office in the country as a source of inspiration and motivation for millions. President Murmu, who represents the Indian tribal society, represents selfless dedication to the betterment of society and the country, CM Sarma added.

Speaking on the immense contribution of the members of the tea tribes community towards the socio-economic and cultural aspects of the state, Sarma gave a brief outline on the history of British-era migration from regions such as present-day Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, etc. The Chief Minister praised the tea tribal community for enriching the Assamese cultural environment by assimilating into the larger Assamese culture and referred to it as a community that is fundamental to the identity of the state. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of their socioeconomic uplift and spoke about the state government's initiatives in this area. Children from the tea tribes community would greatly benefit from the commencement of an educational revolution if there were 100 new model high schools built in tea garden locations. He added that this would lower the high dropout rate among the youth in the tea tribe group.

The chief minister stated that 27 seats in the state's nine medical colleges have been designated for applicants from the tea tribal group and that there are plans in place for a high school for every four tea gardens and a graduating college for every 15 tea gardens.

Sarma claimed that the 3,000 new model Anganwadi centers, which came at a cost of Rs 750 crore total, will serve as a catalyst for assuring the children of the state's mental and physical development and well-being. In addition to the 1,000 such centers that are currently operational and the 3,000 centers opened today, another 2,000 such centers will be dedicated to assisting the public in the upcoming years, according to Sarma. The goal is to build 60,000 of these model Anganwadi centers, each costing Rs 25 lakh.

Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision for a transformed North-East, the Chief Minister exuded confidence that the projects launched today under various central ministries would herald a new dawn of prosperity and growth in the region. The inauguration of the two-lane Silchar-Badarpur stretch on National Highway-53 and the four-lane Gohpur-Holongi stretch of National Highway-52A and the foundation stone laying packages-1 and package-2 of the Dibrugarh-Ledo stretch along National Highway-37 today is a step towards achieving the cherished dreams of the Prime Minister for the North-East, he added. These and the Indian Oil Corporation's rail-fed Petroleum Storage Depot at Moinarbond would prove decisive in the region's overall growth, Sarma said.

The Chief Minister also extended a warm welcome to President Murmu to return to the state and witness the breathtaking beauty of the Kaziranga National Park and tea gardens.
