EV policy adopted by Tripura to curb pollution and promote EVs

The government plans to convert 10% of the 60,000 vehicles currently on the road to electric-powered vehicles over the next five years.

Digital Desk: The Tripura government has adopted the Tripura Electric Vehicle Policy to curb vehicular pollution and save fuel. The policy promotes electric vehicles.

According to a senior Transport Department official, Tripura is the 15th state to adopt the electric vehicle policy and the third in the northeastern area after Assam and Meghalaya.

He said the Tripura Electric Vehicle Policy 2022 was adopted by the state government, which Chief Minister Manik Saha leads, to encourage people to use more electric vehicles in the state.

According to the official, Tripura has 60,000 different types of vehicles, with the government aiming to convert 10% of these 60,000 vehicles to electric in the next five years.

According to reports, the electric vehicle policy has already been adopted in 14 states, including Assam and Meghalaya, in the country's northeastern area.

Meanwhile, in Tripura, over 12,000 vehicles, including around 8,000 private cars and 3,800 auto-rickshaws, are run by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), provided by the state-owned Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL).

It is to be noted that CNG is less expensive than gasoline and diesel and produces no pollution.

As mentioned in 1990, the TNGCL, a joint venture comprising GAIL (India) Ltd, Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, and Assam Gas Company Ltd, was the first in eastern India to set up CNG.
