Digital Desk: Assam reports its first case of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection in a 10-month-old infant's body. The infant was admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh and undergoing treatment, officials confirmed the news on Saturday. The medical reported that the infected infant is now in stable condition.
AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan said, "The HMPV infection was confirmed yesterday after we got test results from Lahowal-based ICMR-RMRC. It was a routine test during which the HMPV infection was detected. The child is stable now. It is a common virus and there is
nothing to worry about."
ICMR, NE, Lahowal's senior scientist Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty said, "Since 2014, we have detected 110 HMPV cases in the Dibrugarh district. This is the first case this season. Every year it is detected, and nothing is new. We have got the sample from AMCH and this has been found
positive for HMPV."
Total cases of HMPV mounted to 13 in India as of now, with reports of positive cases coming from Bengaluru, Gujarat, Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai other than Assam.
According to reports, all the Chinese hospitals are overcrowded due to the recent surge of children and adults showing HMPV-related symptoms.
The first case of HMPV in India was identified in Bengaluru. An 8-month-old baby tested positive while undergoing a test in a private hospital in Bengaluru. According to reports, an 80-year-old man was hospitalized on Wednesday after resembling symptoms of HMPV in his body.
Some of the key symptoms of HMPV include cough, mild to moderate fever, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath etc. China has confirmed that the country is communicating with the World Health Organization (WHO) over the recent outbreak of HMPV in the country.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that HMPV is not a new virus and it has been circulating for more than 60 years. He also added that the Chinese Government is very serious about their people's health.
